Enkele Linux-distributies en andere bedrijven hebben zich vereningd om 
Linux in de toekomst ook voor desktop-computers geschikt te maken. Het 
doel van het Desktop Linux Consortium is om de gebruikers te informeren 
over het alternatieve besturingssysteem, zodat het zich snel verspreid, 
berichten Amerikaanse media. Lid van het consortium zijn de 
distributeurs SuSE, Lycoris, Xandros, MandrakeSoft en ArcLinux. Daarbij 
komen nog de softwarefabrikant CodeWeavers als belangrijkste initiator 
en de projecten OpenOffice en KDE.
